Singapore may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of a family holiday, but this little city state is jam-packed with attractions that will appeal to children and adults alike. It's also a wonderful place to bring youngsters for their first taste of Asian culture - and with such a melting pot of ethnicities in the city, you can get an overview of the continent without having to travel far.

Children are sure to love wandering along the colourful streets of Little India, visiting the amazing temples in Chinatown and marvelling at the modern malls on Orchard Street. For parents, simply discovering Singapore's varied districts is a real delight too.

There are also some fantastic outdoor spaces, such as Gardens by the Bay. This park has amazing supertrees, an OCBC Skyway walk between two of the structures, and a light and sound show that takes place every evening as the sun goes down.

Sentosa Island is a brilliant place for families to come to during a holiday in Singapore - you can even base yourselves here if you think one or two days just isn't enough to get to grips with all the attractions on offer.

Aside from its incredible beaches, Sentosa Island is home to a wide variety of attractions. At Wave House Sentosa you and the kids can learn to ride the waves on Asia's first artificial wave-riding experience; at the Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom your family can find out more about Singapore's flora and fauna; and you can all enjoy a few thrills on the Skyline Luge Sentosa.

Other top options for a day out with the family include Singapore Zoo, the Science Centre Singapore, Marine Life Park - which is home to the world's largest oceanarium - Wild Wild Wet water park, Snow City and the MINT Museum of Toys, where you can go on a journey through playthings past and present.

Get back to nature

One of the wonderful things about Singapore as a holiday destination is that it's much more than just a city - there are several nature reserves for you to explore with the kids as well. One of the best is Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, where you can go on fantastic rainforest walks and try to spot some of the many animals that call the protected area home. There's also an informative visitor centre where you can learn more about the local ecosystems, as well as conservation efforts in the region.

To make sure you and your children see some fascinating creatures, pay a visit to the Singapore Night Safari, where you can see 130 nocturnal species as they interact within a 40-hectare park. This is one of the city's top visitor attractions and well worth exploring during your holiday.

Similarly, you can go on a River Safari, which is the only river-themed wildlife park in Asia. A trip here will allow you to spot the likes of giant river otters, Mekong giant catfish, giant salamanders and many other exotic creatures.
