Romance in Kenya

Kenya may not be the first destination you think of when you're planning a holiday as a couple, but it's a wonderful choice if you're looking for a romantic break with a difference. Imagine standing hand-in-hand watching the sun setting over the savannah, or relaxing on a pristine tropical beach with palm trees swaying gently in the breeze.

Splash out on a luxury safari

There are many eco lodges and luxury safari camps in Kenya now, so you don't need to abandon your creature comforts when you go in search of the country's astounding wildlife. Choose one of the exclusive camps and you can look forward to waking up in a luxurious bed and stepping outside to uninterrupted views of the savannah stretching away from you.

If you're lucky you may even have company in the form of elephants, zebras, giraffes or some of Kenya's other fabulous creatures as you gaze out over the scenery in front of you. For a really memorable and special safari, arrange to have a private guide when you go out to explore in the reserve - it will be a wonderful shared experience for you to treasure long after your holiday has ended.

To avoid crowds of other tourists, choose to go on a safari in one of Kenya's quieter national parks - such as the remote and beautiful Sibiloi or South and Central Island national parks. Collectively these are a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the fact that they surround Lake Turkana - the most saline lake in east Africa and the largest desert lake on the planet.

Travel here and you can see a wide array of birds, including flamingos, pelicans and African skimmers, while various other animals inhabit the region, including reticulated giraffes, topis, cheetahs, Grant's gazelles and Nile crocodiles - Central Island is actually the largest breeding area for this species of crocodile in the world.

Try new activities together

There is a variety of things you can do as a couple while you're staying in Mombasa or at one of its resorts. The stunning coral reefs thriving just beneath the surface of the ocean make this an ideal place for scuba diving and making your first forays into the underwater world together will add a whole new dimension to your holiday.
For a peaceful day out, take a cruise in a traditional dhow boat, which will show you another side of Kenya that you may otherwise miss. If you'd prefer to explore on your own, hire bikes and cycle to some of the remote villages along the south coast - it's a wonderful way to experience local life and see a bit more of Kenya's culture.
