Older children and parents may also want to try scuba diving, to get an even closer look at the creatures that live beneath the waves. There are several dive centres across the islands that offer try dives, as well as full courses, so you can experience something truly different as a family.

There's plenty of excitement to be had on land too. Hikes and elephant rides are a fantastic way to get up close to Indonesia's tropical landscape and spot wildlife such as monkeys. In Bali, Ubud's Monkey Forest is ideal for a family excursion. Its ancient Hindu temple sits in the centre of a rainforest reserve that's overrun with curious grey macaques. In the south, Uluwatu is similarly enthralling and has the added draw of hosting a traditional fire dance at sunset. The family will be transfixed by this Hindu tale played out with ornate costumes, chanting and fire in a small amphitheatre on the clifftop. Taking an elephant trek through the forest is also highly recommended.

Visiting Java's awesome man-made marvels is also an experience that will capture the whole family's imagination. Adults will enjoy the rich history and magic of the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan, while kids can channel their inner adventurers, clambering around the ancient monuments and inside the mysterious temples, with volcanoes clearly visible on the horizon.
